Why the honing pattern matters more than the bore size

Honing leaves a cross-hatch of fine valleys that retain oil. If the angle and depth are wrong, the ring cannot build an oil film, and you get high oil consumption, blow-by and a long run-in.

A bore can measure perfectly round and still be unusable because the surface was polished smooth or honed too coarse.

Surface treatment

Nitriding puts nitrogen into the surface and raises wear resistance without changing dimensions much. Phosphating is a thinner, cheaper treatment mainly for run-in.

Neither fixes a soft casting. Hardness has to come from the material first.

Cavitation pitting on the outer wall

Vibration makes coolant bubbles collapse against the liner wall, and each collapse knocks atoms off the surface. Over time you get pits and pinholes on the water side.

This is a coolant problem, not a liner problem. Replace the liner, fix the coolant (correct inhibitor concentration, no air entrainment, correct pressure cap) — otherwise the new one pits too.

Солихоос өмнө юу шалгах хэрэгтэй

  • Measure bore at three heights and two directions — taper and out-of-round, not just one number
  • Liner protrusion above the deck, checked with a straight edge and feeler gauge
  • Cross-hatch still visible, not polished to a mirror
  • Pitting on the water side, especially near the top where vibration is highest
