Fibre, rubber, flexible graphite or aramid blends. Used for water pumps, fuel pumps, sumps, rocker covers. They conform to imperfect surfaces and tolerate small distortion.
They do not tolerate over-torque. Squash a soft gasket too far and it stops recovering, then it weeps.
Multi-layer steel with embossed sealing beads is standard where combustion pressure is high. It needs a flat, correctly finished deck — the bead has very little tolerance for a low spot.
Composite gaskets with a steel core and soft facing are more forgiving of surface finish but carry less peak pressure.
A failure between two cylinders means the head or block was not flat, or the bolts were not replaced. A failure to a water passage at one end often means the cooling system was pressurising from a blocked breather or a warped head.
Replace the gasket, but measure head flatness, bolt stretch and liner protrusion first. Otherwise the new one fails the same way.
