Engine exhaust manifold gasket for the Caterpillar 3066 / S6K / C6.4 diesel engine family (also 3064 / C4.2) — a direct replacement for the original Caterpillar 178-6553. Multi-layer steel (metal) construction with rectangular exhaust ports and bolt holes, clamped between the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold to seal high-temperature exhaust gas.
The exhaust manifold gasket is a wear item: sustained heat and thermal cycling cause it to burn, crack and collapse, leading to an exhaust leak. Typical signs are a hiss at the joint, soot / black marks, low turbo boost pressure, power loss and increased exhaust noise. It is normally replaced when the exhaust manifold or turbo is removed, or during an engine overhaul.
Supplied as a single gasket (multi-layer metal). Confirm the removed part number and the port layout before ordering; clean the head and manifold faces, check flatness, and tighten with new fasteners in a diagonal sequence in stages.
