Engine oil cooler core (plate-type cooler element) for the Caterpillar 3066 / S6K / C6.4 diesel engine family (also 3064 / C4.2) — a direct replacement for the original Caterpillar 125-2970. Brazed plate construction: a stack of stainless-steel plates, copper-brazed, with thicker end plates carrying the oil ports. It mounts on the side of the cylinder block and uses engine coolant to pull heat out of the oil.
The oil cooler core is a wear item: continuous heat and thermal cycling eventually cause leaks between the plates (oil and coolant cross-contamination). Typical failures are oil-in-coolant or coolant-in-oil (milky oil / cloudy coolant), coolant in the oil pan, external oil or coolant weeping and high oil temperature. It is normally replaced during an overhaul or whenever cross-contamination is found, together with a check of the cooling system.
Supplied as a single core (brazed stainless-steel plate). Before ordering, confirm the removed part number and the port layout; before fitting, clean the oil and coolant passages thoroughly, torque to specification, renew the related seals and refill with the correct oil and coolant.
Oil and coolant cross-contamination (milky oil / cloudy coolant), coolant in the oil pan, coolant loss, external oil or coolant weeping, high oil temperature.
Installation Tips
1. Drain the oil and coolant; remove the cooler housing and take out the old core.
2. Clean the housing and the oil / coolant passages; remove any sludge or debris.
3. Fit the new core with new seals; torque the housing to specification.
4. Refill with the correct engine oil and coolant, then run and check for leaks and correct oil / coolant temperature.
5. If coolant was in the oil, flush the system and change the oil filter before running the machine.
